Founded by the Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation in 1984, the Texas Animal Hall of Fame was created to share the joy of the human-animal bond by recognizing exceptional animals. Texas Veterinary Medical Association members and the general public nominate animals each year, which are then chosen by the TVMF Board of Trustees.

The goals of the Texas Animal Hall of Fame are the following:

  • To honor the outstanding contributions our animal companions make to human lives.
  • To heighten public awareness of the human-animal bond.
  • To allow Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA) members to share in celebrating their patients’ accomplishments by serving as nominators.

Nominations are sought in three categories:

  • Hero: an animal that has performed an incredible act of bravery or saved a human life.
  • Companion: an animal that has provided a special benefit to its community or human companions.
  • Professional: a remarkable, specially trained assistance animal.

Selection:

No more than one entrant will be selected in each category of the Texas Animal Hall of Fame each year. The TVMF Board of Trustees reviews nominations submitted by TVMA members and the public and chooses which animals will be inducted.

Recognition:

If selected, an inductee will be recognized at a meeting of a nearby local veterinary medical association. The animal’s owner will be presented a plaque at the event, and the animal will receive an appropriate token of recognition, such as a medal or ribbon.

Requirements:

Nominees must be animals that, through unselfish and courageous accomplishment, exemplify the affection, loyalty, security and value of the human-animal bond.

Each nomination for membership in the Texas Animal Hall of Fame is to be submitted on an official application, with the signature of the animal’s owner/steward. Applications for each year are typically available June and are due to be received in the TVMF office by Sept. 15.

Attached to the nomination should be a letter describing why the animal should be considered for induction into the Texas Animal Hall of Fame. You may wish to explain how the animal exhibited special abilities and/or courageous or unselfish behavior, examples of the animal’s affection, loyalty and companionship, or the ways in which it provides healthful benefits, confidence or opportunities for exercise, socialization or laughter. The veterinary sponsor may include up to three additional letters of support for the animal’s membership in the hall. At least 2-3 photos of the animal are also requested.

The actions or accomplishments of the animal must have occurred between July 15, 2012-July 15, 2013 for the Sept. 15, 2013 deadline. The animal and its owner must live primarily in Texas. They must also be available to receive the award and participate in the public recognition activities at no expense to the Foundation.

TVMA member veterinarians and the public may obtain application forms by downloading one here or by contacting TVMF at 512/452-4224. Application forms and any supporting materials must be submitted to the office of the Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation, 8104 Exchange Dr, Austin, TX 78754 by Sept. 15, 2013.
